Positioning for Keywords

You will want to make sure that your important keywords are located in the most important places on your site.  The homepage for your site is a very important location to begin laying out the content and navigational structure for your site.  It will also begin to define to the search engines what your site is about.

1.) The Meta Title Tag is Important

Make sure that you carefully describe the content of your web page that you are optimizing.  The content in the title tag is very important, and one of the most important factors in defining a web page.  Each page on your web site should have a unique title tag to ensure that it will be included with the search engine index.   The title tag is also displayed in all of the search engine when the results are displayed.  The text in the title tag is very important because it will influence the web searcher when they click on your web page.

2.) The Meta Description

The meta description is very important in describing what a web page is about to the search engines.  The search engines also frequently display a portion of the description in the search results.  It is also used in the algorithms of all major engines, which make it very important.

3.) Location of your Keywords

You should write your web pages packed with relevant keywords and phrases.  When you place your keywords throughout the page, you will want to make sure that you have your targeted keyword located near the top of the page.  You will probably also want to have the targetted keyword placed within an H1 or H2 tag at the top of the page.  When you think about it logically it makes perfect sense that the main topic for a page be listed towards the top of the page.  Now just to make it read natuarally, you will also want to make sure that you use the keyword or keyphrase throughout the page even towards the bottom of the page.

4.) What type of tags are important

You will want to make sure that you position your keywords throughout the web page in diffent identifiable tags.  We already mentioned the importance of the H1 tag, but you will also want to use other HTML tags to highlight the keyword, such as the bold tag, the strong tag, and the a tag.  You will want to also use the main keyword in a paragraph and also an alt tag.  It is important to use variation in all of your written pages, as well as optimization.  This will give you a better chance in the engines, and a better chance to get high rankings.

5.) Keyword Stuffing - What is it and how to avoid it.

Keyword stuffing is the repetitive use of keyphrases over and over in an attempt to get into the top results.  This is an old technique and it actually use to work very well in the past.  But the search engines quickly built this out of the algorithm's and now sites actually can receive page penalties for such practice.  So you will definitely want to avoid any type of keyword stuffing or overusing any word or phrase on your page.

6.) Images & the Alt Tag - How do they affect ranking?

A search engine doesn't know how to handle an image, or more importantly what an image refers to or means.  You can place an ALT tag onto an image which does add value to the image as it helps to describe to the engine what the image is about.  Now you have to be carewith with alt tags, because they have historically been a location that a keyword stuffer could high a large number of hidden keywords.

An alt tag exists for visually impaired web searchers who have special software to help them hear what a web page is about.  It is very good practice to use the alt tag even if you don't envision many of your customers being visually impaired.  Not only is it the right thing to do, but it is also valued by the search engine.
