Active Server Pages (ASP.NET)

ASP or Active server pages is one of the most popular server side scripting languages out there. Microsoft has just released the DOT Net platform which has taken this already popular language to new levels. In a nutshell, server languages help you provide dynamic content on your web sites, to communicate with a database, and help your site perform ecommerce functions. Most of the newer shopping carts out there are being built using ASP or some other server side language.

Active Server Pages (ASP) is not for beginners. ASP can provide a powerful solution to most web site questions. A good programmer can use ASP to exchange data with a database, upload files, send emails, manage customers, operate an electronic shopping cart, and do it quickly and seamless to the user. ASP 3.0 has now been released at the same time as Microsoft's Dot Net platform. At the same time ASP.NET was also released with the new ASP version. What does this mean for you and I? Nothing really because ASP.NET and ASP 3.0 both run on the same web server as the web pages simply have different extensions. The main difference in these two languages is that the ASP.NET platform has integration XML technology in an attempt to simplify the development of web sites. ASP now incorporated more of a component architecture.

Active Server Pages( ASP ) is very similar to other server side scripting languages. In reality they are all very similar, the differences are actually pretty minor. The main thing that you should be careful of when selecting a server language, is more related to the overall project requirements. For example, if you are going to work with Linux and MySQL Database, then you will probably usa a solution of either JSP or PHP. If you are going with a Microsoft based solution, then you will most likely use ASP and SQL Server.

What does all of this technical stuff mean for the lay person? Not much really, as most of this will be transparent to the user and the web site owner. If you have a preference about which type of system you want to go with, this may make the selection process easier. ASP is a great language and couple with SQL Server this pair is hard to match.
